Pregnancy/Birth Complications: Let's Get Educated!
Pregnancy and birth are beautiful and miraculous experiences. However, there are rare occasions when complications occur. Should you face the unexpected, here are few things that are helpful to know about. It's good to be educated on potential complications so that when your doctor mentions them, you understand and can be informed in order to make the best decisions for you and baby!
1. Preeclampsia: This is when you develop high blood pressure that is no longer within healthy ranges. This usually occur in the last half of pregnancy. You may experience headaches, swelling, blurred vision, etc.
2. Cord Prolapse: This is when the umbilical cord that goes from your placenta to your baby becomes compromised by protruding out from the cervix. A knot or a kink or the cord wrapping around baby’s neck are also options as well.. When this happens, the normal blood flow that carries oxygen and nutrients to baby, slows or stops and becomes dangerous or life threatening to baby.
3. Failure to progress: This can occur after laboring for a long period and contractions have become weak or stalled. This can also be due to your cervix not continuing to dilate, or the baby not descending through the birth canal.
4. Breech presentation: This is when your baby is presenting with their feet near the birth canal and with their head up toward your diaphragm. The ideal position for a safe vaginal delivery is head down near the birth canal.
There are so many options for you and your baby if you are experiencing any of these complications. Talk to your doctor about the safest and best ways to treat these situations!
